Questions

Good to know

How long does it take?

There’s no time limit. Each barista and latte art course is 8 short lessons and a quiz (Level 1 HACCP has 9), so most people can work through a course in a few evenings. Your progress is saved on your device.

What do I film for the practical?

It depends on your route. At a coffee machine: an espresso shot, steaming milk and a latte art pour. With no machine: a talk-through of the espresso workflow, your pour technique using water in any jug, and a short customer-service role-play. Upload them to Google Drive, Dropbox or YouTube (unlisted) and send the links from your award page. Our trainers watch them and reply with feedback.

Can I get a refund?

Yes: 14-day refund.* *Terms apply.

Do I need a coffee machine?

No. If you can use one (at work, at a friend’s café or at home), you can film your practical on it. If you can’t, choose the no-machine route: pass our online Bar Skills Assessment (25 real bar situations, many with pictures), then film three short videos with no coffee needed. Both lead to the same award. Your reference letter says which route you took, and suggests a short trial shift so an employer can see you at the machine.

How fast will I hear back?

Our trainers review your practical within 3 working days and email you their feedback, or your award.

What if my practical isn’t there yet?

Our trainers tell you what to work on. Practise, film again and send new videos. There’s no extra charge and no limit.

Do I get a certificate for each course?

Bought as the award, each course is a section of it, so the one certificate you get is the Qualified Barista Award at the end. Level 1 HACCP is the exception: it has its own certificate, because employers ask for it. The bonus courses (Allergen Awareness, Customer Service and Manual Handling Awareness) each give their own certificate too.

I’ve already passed some of the courses. Can I still get the award?

Yes. If you buy the courses one by one, you get a certificate for each. When you’ve passed all five with the same email address, we invite you to take the last step: the practical review and award, €59. Buying the award in one go is better value, with €272 of free extras.

I’m heading to Australia, Canada or the UK. What else will cafés ask for?

Cafés everywhere hire on a short trial shift, and your award, your CV and your reference letter help you get one. Some countries also ask for a local certificate that you can only do there, and it’s quick and cheap: in Australia, an RSA if the venue serves alcohol and, in some states, a food handler certificate; in the UK, cafés usually ask for Level 2 Food Hygiene; in Canada, a provincial food handler certificate (for example in Ontario). The “Finding a job” guide in the CV Builder walks you through it.

Do I get a reference for employers?

Yes. With your award we send a training reference letter on Barista School Ireland letterhead. It lists every course you passed, with dates, scores and certificate IDs, how your practical was assessed, and a comment from our trainers. It’s a training reference (we haven’t employed you), so it’s honest about what it covers, which is exactly why employers trust it.

Can an employer check my award?

Yes. Every certificate has its own ID that anyone can check at baristaschoolireland.ie/verify. The check shows the award, your name and the date, never your email.

Is it an accredited qualification?

Yes. You will receive a Barista School Ireland (BSI) / QBA accredited certificate.
