Questions, answered
Everything people ask us before they book, from choosing a course to finding a parking space in Bandon.
The courses
Do I need any experience?
Not for the Barista Workshop, Barista Workshop Express or either latte art course. They suit complete beginners and home coffee lovers as well as people starting in a café, and café owners and managers. Barista Level 2 is the exception: it’s for people who’ve done the workshop and spent around 100 hours on an espresso machine.
Which course should I choose?
Most people start with the Barista Workshop, a full Saturday from bean to latte art. If you just want to pour better, try the two-hour Latte Art Masterclass. If you want to work as a barista, the 3-day BSI/QBA includes a day of real work experience. Not sure? Tell us a little about yourself and we’ll point you to the right one.
How much do the courses cost?
Barista Workshop €159, Latte Art Masterclass €75, Barista Workshop Express €129, Latte Art Workshop €150, Barista Level 2 €150, and the 3-day BSI/QBA €395 when you book online (€495 standard). Everything you use on the day is included.
What’s the difference between the Latte Art Masterclass and the Latte Art Workshop?
The Masterclass is two intensive hours, almost all of it on the machine: perfect your milk, then your pour. The Workshop is a full day that adds milk chemistry, station management and more advanced designs, with coffee and milk for 70+ lattes and an end-of-day assessment.
How much hands-on time will I get?
A lot. We split each course into theory and practical, and keep classes small so everyone gets real time on the machine. On the Barista Workshop there’s coffee and milk for 70+ lattes between a class of six.
Which latte art designs will I learn?
Every course starts with the heart, rosetta and tulip. The full-day courses go on to look at further designs, depending on how you’re getting on.
Do you cover plant milks?
Yes. Our latte art courses cover how dairy, almond, soya and coconut milk behave, and how to get the best from each in the cup.
Do I get a certificate?
Yes. Every course ends with a Barista School Ireland certificate. The full-day courses include an end-of-day assessment with your results, and the BSI/QBA comes with a BSI/QBA certificate and a HACCP Level 1 certificate.
What happens after the course?
You get four weeks of email support, so the questions that come up at your own machine get a proper answer. You also take your course notes home.
BSI/QBA and careers
What is the BSI/QBA?
Barista School Ireland / Qualified Barista Award, our most complete course. Two classroom days (09:30 to 17:00) cover the Barista Workshop, Barista Level 2, station management, customer service and advanced latte art, followed by a day of work experience. See the full course.
What happens on the work-experience day?
You spend 7+ hours, on a day we agree with you, in a busy specialty coffee shop whose staff have all been trained by Barista School Ireland. You open and close, manage a barista station, use the till, serve customers, make drinks under pressure and put HACCP into practice.
Will it help me get a job as a barista?
That’s what it’s built for. Day 2 includes a CV review and recommendations if you’d like one, and once you’re BSI/QBA qualified we recommend our graduates to our trade partners when they have barista positions open.
Can a grant pay for my course?
If you’re on a jobseeker’s payment, the Training Support Grant can cover the 3-day BSI/QBA course. See how training grants work.
