Everyone in a food business
Anyone who works in a food business, whether they handle food all day or only now and then. It’s ideal for:
- New starters, before or in their first week
- Part-time, seasonal and Christmas staff
- Front of house, baristas, kitchen porters and delivery staff
- Anyone who wants a quick recap of the basics
Cafés, restaurants, hotels, shops, delis, food trucks and producers: high or low risk, the basic skills are the same.
The basics, done properly
This course covers the knowledge for the basic food safety skills set out by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) in its Guide to Food Safety Skills (2025), Level 1: Induction Food Safety Skills. It suits complete beginners and anyone who has had food safety training before. HACCP principles are introduced at this level; Level 2 and 3 courses go further.
There are no entry requirements. Every lesson has a short video, clear infographics and real-life scenarios, and the course finishes with a 20-question quiz.
Your certificate of completion is issued by Barista School Ireland. It’s valid for 2 years from the day you pass (our recommended refresher; the FSAI sets no expiry). Employers must still supervise staff and train them in their own workplace’s procedures.

Good to know
Is this an official qualification?
You get a Barista School Ireland certificate of completion, covering the FSAI’s Level 1 induction skills, from an online course based on the FSAI’s Guide to Food Safety Skills (2025). Full details are in our terms of sale. The FSAI doesn’t require a certificate from any particular course: food businesses must make sure staff are supervised and trained in food hygiene for the work they do: this course covers the general knowledge for the Level 1 skills, and your workplace trains you in its own procedures.
How long do I have to finish?
There’s no time limit. Your progress is saved on your device, so you can stop and come back.
What if I don’t pass the quiz?
You’ll see which topics to look at again, and you can retake the quiz as many times as you need.
Will I get my certificate by email?
Yes. You can download it the moment you pass, and we email it to you too. Lost it? Request it again with your email address and we’ll send it back to that address.
Can I add it when booking a barista course?
Yes. Tick it at checkout when you book any of our courses.
Does the course replace my workplace’s food safety procedures?
No. It’s general food safety training that supports, but never replaces, the HACCP-based food safety system, procedures, training and supervision where you work: always follow those first. We take care to keep it accurate and up to date, but errors or omissions can occur. See Scope and limits of the training in our terms.
